Foto.kg: Kyrgyz Photo Archive
A volunteer-built photo archive of Kyrgyzstan: thousands of old images from pre-revolutionary Pishpek to Soviet Frunze, with captions, dates, photographers and notes.

What it is
Foto.kg is the Kyrgyz Photo Archive, a project run by the Union of Photojournalists of Kyrgyzstan. Its stated goal is twofold: to tell the history of Kyrgyzstan through photographs, and to document the history of photography in the country. The team explains that Kyrgyzstan has no single public photo archive and that state holdings are scattered and hard to access, so they gather images from family albums, museums and archives, scan glass plates and prints, restore them and post them with descriptions.
The core is the Photo Archive feed, which runs to more than four hundred pages. Around it sit sections for the story behind a single photograph, the country through photographers' eyes, historical maps, historical books, essays, background notes and a section on the Central State Archive of film, photo and sound documents. The whole site is in Russian only.
Why we picked it
It's still growing. In September 2026 new uploads included a series on building the Great Chui and Great Fergana canals, a photo of Chinghiz Aitmatov with Tonino Guerra and Gabriel García Márquez, and a group portrait of women in festive dress from Naryn region. Many entries go well beyond a caption. A 1920s shot by the Vyrvinsky brothers of market day by the Uzgen minaret comes with a full note on Uzgen, the Karakhanids and how tall the minaret may originally have been.
The most viewed items give you a feel for the range: Yuri Gagarin's visit to Kirghizia, the Frunze Palace of Pioneers, and hunters in Tokmak posing with the skin of a Turan tiger, an animal long gone from the region.
The historical maps are worth a detour on their own: a plan of the siege of the Pishpek fortress, maps of Frunze and the Kirghiz SSR, and pre-revolutionary maps of the Turkestan region and Semirechye showing settlements of present-day Kyrgyzstan.
Where to start
- Scroll the front page feed to see what has been added most recently.
- Open the story-of-one-photo section for long reads, such as the pieces on Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky or Aitmatov at a livestock research institute.
- In the maps section, find the Pishpek siege plan and the old Frunze maps, then compare them with Bishkek today.
- Check the Popular block in the sidebar for the images people look up most.
- Use your browser's translate feature if you don't read Russian; captions are short and translate well.
Who it's for
People who love old photographs and city history, anyone with family roots in Frunze or Soviet Kirghizia, researchers and writers who need images with a named photographer and date, and travelers who want to see what the places they visit looked like a century ago.
