Mid-Century, More Than: modernism in two languages
A bilingual Russian-English Telegram channel on 20th-century modernist architecture and design: furniture, interiors, forgotten makers and the stories behind objects.

What it is
Mid-Century, More Than is a Telegram channel about 20th-century modernism in architecture and design. Its twist: it's bilingual. Every post is written in Russian first, with an English version right below. When we checked, it had about 17,000 subscribers and a steady posting rhythm.
Why we picked it
Most modernism accounts online are all pretty pictures and very little explanation. This one flips that. The images are there, but the stories do the work. Who was James Galt, and why does a company he founded in England in 1836 matter to furniture history? How did Dutch maker Jacob van den Bosch go from a bookbinding workshop to design? What was happening in Stuttgart in 1925, while the Bauhaus was moving from Weimar to Dessau?
There are regular series. "Interior of the week" covered, for instance, what's billed as the world's first boutique hotel, which started by rejecting heavy luxury. The "Postmodernism Herald" is already past its 270th issue. Now and then the author runs a quiz — name the book from its cover, or the object from a detail — and followers are surprisingly quick to answer.
The voice is calm and precise, no gushing adjectives. It reads like notes from someone who knows the subject well and is sharing finds from their own library.
Where to start
- Start with "Interior of the week" — it's the easiest way in.
- Read a couple of "Postmodernism Herald" posts to see how modernism differs from what came after.
- Have a go at a quiz if one turns up in the feed.
- If you're learning Russian, read the English part first and then the Russian one.
Who it's for
Fans of vintage furniture and mid-century design, architects and interior designers who want names and backstories, and anyone who likes design history in bite-size posts. English speakers can follow along comfortably thanks to the translations.
