Chiharu Shiota's threads
The Berlin-based Japanese artist fills whole rooms with red and black thread. Her account tracks installations in museums around the world.

What it is
@chiharushiota is the official account of Chiharu Shiota, a Japanese artist based in Berlin. She is known for thread installations: red or black yarn fills a gallery from floor to ceiling and wraps around objects such as old doors, windows, shoes, boats and beds. The feed is photos and video of her work in museums, often reposted from the venues themselves.
Captions are mostly in English, sometimes in the language of the host country (we saw Korean, for example).
Why we picked it
This is work that is hard to describe and still hits you through a phone screen. In September 2026 the feed showed an installation in Korea where 140 kilometres of red thread drop from the ceiling toward a worn door and a row of other people's shoes with handwritten notes. There was also "A Room of Memory" at the 21st Century Museum in Kanazawa, built from discarded wooden windows she collected on Berlin building sites over several years, and news that her touring show "The Soul Trembles" had passed two million visitors.
Shiota's subject is memory, absence and what people leave behind. The feed is serious but not heavy. Quiet is the better word.
Where to start
- Watch the walk-through videos; moving through the thread shows the scale far better than photos.
- Find the "A Room of Memory" post with the Berlin windows and read the caption.
- Check the exhibition announcements in case a show is heading to your city.
- Compare the red works with the black ones; the mood is completely different.
Who it's for
Anyone who likes contemporary art that doesn't need a wall label to land. Interior designers and set designers looking at how to handle space. Travellers who want to catch a show on the way.
Quick answers
Is this the artist or a fan page? The artist's own. Her website links to @chiharushiota.
Where are her shows right now? In September 2026 the feed covered exhibitions in Korea, Japan, Canada and Brazil. Check recent posts for current dates.
Do I need English? Not for the images. It helps for the details.
