Modern Art 19-20th century: overlooked painters

What it is

Modern Art 19-20th century (@modernart20) is a small painting channel. The bio is almost nothing but a date range, 1870–1990, from the late nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth. Each post is a painting with a short English caption: the artist's name, nationality and life dates, and often the title, year, medium and size.

Posts arrive in batches of several paintings, with a week or two of quiet in between. We didn't see any ads in the feed.

Why we picked it

The names are the draw. Instead of yet another Monet you get the Finnish painter Hugo Backmansson, the Dane Erik Henningsen with his Dance Pavilion from 1891, the Polish painter Anna Bilińska-Bohdanowicz on Berlin's Unter den Linden, the British watercolourist Ella Du Cane, and the Austrian Ernst Graner painting Prince Eugene's palace in Vienna. Alongside them: a 1959 gouache by the Polish artist Jerzy Szelągowski and Le Chat Noir by the Romanian painter Carol Hübner.

The captions are what set it apart. Plenty of Telegram art channels just dump images with no credit. Here you nearly always know who painted it and when, so if something catches your eye you can look the artist up and go further.

Where to start

  • Scroll through the latest batch and note one or two paintings that stop you.
  • Search for the artist in the caption; many turn up in museum collections online.
  • Look for the watercolours. Du Cane and Graner show what the medium could do around 1900.
  • If you like city scenes, hunt down the Berlin and Vienna street views.

Who it's for

People who love painting but are tired of seeing the same textbook canon. Illustrators and designers looking for visual references with clear attribution. And anyone who'd rather see one lovely painting in their feed than another headline.
