What it is
@annelisethearchaeologist is the TikTok account of archaeologist Annelise Baer. Her bio calls her "your friendly neighborhood archaeologist" (and a producer) and names her focus plainly: ancient Near Eastern archaeology and the classics. The account has around 254,000 followers and more than 1,300 videos.
Why we picked it
Archaeology on social media often gets sold as sensational mysteries and lost civilizations. Annelise goes the other way. She explains how the work actually happens, what finds really tell us and why dramatic headlines so often get it wrong. The tone is light and a little irreverent, but there is real expertise underneath.
Our favorite part is her recurring Q&A posts. Followers ask anything, from how excavations are organized to spooky questions about mummies, and she works through them one by one. There are also videos sharing photos of finds, such as material from the sunken Egyptian city of Thonis-Heracleion, and a go-to video answering the question she gets most: how do I become an archaeologist?
Where to start
