Strannik hiking club

The channel of a Bishkek hiking club: training sessions, mountain trips, rock climbing and competitions for kids and adults.

Strannik hiking club

What it is

Strannik is a hiking club in Bishkek with a mountain tourism section for children and adults. Its Telegram channel carries training schedules, trip reports, rock-climbing videos and enrolment notices. It's not a tour agency showcase but the working channel of a team that has been going to the mountains together for years. Posts are in Russian.

Why we picked it

The channel is honest about what hiking really takes. First comes general fitness in a Bishkek park, then rock sessions at Chunkurchak gorge, where kids and adults practise climbing and belaying side by side, and only then the trips. The club tells parents plainly that "we skip training but come on the trips" is not an option. That rule says a lot about how seriously the coach takes safety.

The ambition is real too. In summer 2026 the team completed a 28-day category 5 trek across the Pamir-Alay: from the lakes of Kichik-Alay, over the glaciers of Chon-Alay, to the slopes of Lenin Peak at 6,500 metres. For younger members there was a gentler camp by the Toktogul Reservoir with tents, fishing and a close look at camel spiders. You can see the whole path from a first campfire to serious sport trekking.

Where to start

  • Find the enrolment post: children are accepted from age 8, with a new intake at the start of the school year.
  • Check the training schedule, with morning and evening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Open the Chunkurchak rock day report to see what skills they teach.
  • Read the Pamir trek story for a sense of where training can lead.

Who it's for

Bishkek parents looking for an outdoor activity for their kids, and Russian-speaking adults, including expats living in the city, who want to start hiking in Kyrgyzstan with a team and a coach. Short-term tourists will find it less useful, since the club runs on regular membership.

Quick answers

What age can children join? From 8 years old, both boys and girls.

Where does training happen? In Bishkek's 6th microdistrict, in the walnut grove park; the club posts exact times before each season.

Can I join trips without training? No. Joining the mountain trips requires regular attendance at training.
