Print Magazine: type and lettering board

What it is

A Pinterest board run by Print, the American magazine about visual culture. It's called Typography & Hand-Lettering, and its own description promises typography inspiration and unusual hand-lettering projects. When we checked, it held 516 pins.

Why we picked it

Plenty of boards collect pretty letters. This one was put together by the editors of a design magazine, so many pins come with a line of context: who drew the typeface, where a poster came from, why it caught their eye. In our scroll we saw letterpress posters by Frank Baseman of Base Press, work by Jessica Hische, the MuirMcNeil Cut stencil family, a look at how House Industries grew from a type foundry into something bigger, winners of Print's typography and lettering awards, and a Steven Heller piece on an Armenian type artifact. Craft printing, commercial type design and history end up side by side, which is a good way to train your eye.

It hasn't had new pins in a long while, so treat it as an archive rather than a live feed. For typography that barely matters. Good examples age well.

Where to start

  • Scroll the whole board without opening anything first, just to take in the range of approaches.
  • Open the House Industries and Jessica Hische pins, which have the most detailed captions.
  • Look for the letterpress posters and notice how the texture of the print changes how the type feels.
  • Save a few pieces you want to study more closely and pick apart proportion, contrast and spacing.

Who it's for

Graphic designers who want a quick, curated source of references. People learning lettering who want classics alongside trends. Anyone who notices shop signs and can't stop looking at letterforms.
